Becoming a concierge is a great option for starting your own service business. People often have a list of things to do that they simply don’t have time for. This is a relatively new field and one in which the demand is growing rapidly. This is a great time to consider becoming a concierge and offering services to time-starved clients.
Some of the services offered by a typical concierge service include:
- Dry cleaning pickup and delivery
- Pet-sitting
- Shipping Fed-Ex packages
- Waiting service, such as for a plumber
- Running errands
- Scheduling appointments
- Searching for concert tickets
- Searching for hard-to-find items
- Making travel arrangements
- Gift buying and wrapping
- Relocation planning
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO GET STARTED
Following is a list of things you’ll need if you are interested in becoming a concierge:
- A good computer with internet access
- Cell phone or pager
- Answering machine or service
- Fax machine
- Car or another form of transportation
- Startup advertising (business cards, etc.)
Billing can be based on per service or per hour, but most concierge services are done by monthly membership fees based on how many requests are made during the month. Extra income can sometimes be obtained through “referral fees” to companies such as wedding planners, florists, caterers, etc.
Some concierge services are built around corporate clients, who allow a certain number of services to their employees. A very large corporate client with hundreds of employees can lead to a lucrative monthly income.
PROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS
Get started by running an ad in your local paper. Some concierge services place ads in the yellow pages, but you may want to avoid this expense at first. Get in touch with your local chamber of commerce. You may be able to attend some type of “meet and greet” event where you can pass out business cards.
Have some flyers printed up and distribute them in doctors’ offices, community centers, or nearby airports and hotels. Traveling clients may represent your first target group – people who are new to your area or people who are traveling for business purposes.
Send information packages to the human resources department of large corporations in your area or deliver brochures in person.
You may want to place magnetic signs on both sides of your vehicle with your phone number and the name of your concierge business.
Don’t forget word of mouth. Tell your family and friends about your new service. You may be able to obtain new clients by offering services as a volunteer or at a discounted rate. Offering services free or at a discount will allow you to obtain some recommendations that are readily available to give to other potential clients.
Becoming a concierge is a great opportunity for someone who wants to start a business that requires no formal training and has no set schedule. If you have good customer service skills and good organizational skills, this may be the perfect opportunity for you.
